The Chizi Wigwe Prize for African Futurism 2025 is now open for applications.

This prize, organised by the 1952 Africa Foundation in partnership with the HOW Foundation, aims to support African artists.

The focus is on creative works that explore the future of Africa through art and storytelling.

Theme

The theme for the competition is “Africa in 2100”.

Artists are encouraged to answer these questions through their work:

  • What will African societies look like in 2100?
  • How will technology affect cultural traditions, art, and development?
  • What role will Africa play in global challenges and progress?

Prize

The winner of the Chizi Wigwe Prize will receive $15,000.

Who Can Apply

  • Open to artists and creatives across Africa.
  • Applicants must be between 18 and 45 years old.
  • Entries must be original and aligned with the theme “Africa in 2100”.
  • All artistic disciplines and mediums are accepted.

Application Process

Applicants must submit:

  • Project Proposal – A detailed outline of the artistic work related to African Futurism.
  • Portfolio – A collection of past works demonstrating creativity and skill.
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume – A record of achievements and experience.
  • Reference Letter – A letter from an art director or senior management of an art or cultural organisation.
  • Statement of Purpose – A one-page summary explaining artistic goals and how this prize will help.
